First two weeks back!

All of the children have settled in so well after such a long time away. We are really proud of each and every one of them. The move from Year 1 to Year 2 can feel daunting but the children are taking the new challenges and expectations in their stride.


Inside Out

Our priority as a school is for the children to feel safe and happy. We want them to know their voices are heard and that they can explore all of the emotions they are feeling at this strange and daunting time due to coronavirus. As a school, we have made the decision to focus on exploring emotions through the film Inside Out for the first two weeks back at school. We have focused on naming different emotions; learning how to deal with change; learning to live and learn in an environment where others think and act differently; learning to have more resilience and how to get help if we are feeling an emotion we can’t control.


We have emotions board in our classrooms. They show each emotion and how to deal with the emotion. The children each have a lollipop stick with their name on. If they want they can place it in the pot that expresses the emotion they are feeling. This gives them to chances to let their teacher know how they are feeling but also allows them some privacy as the names cannot be seen outside of the pot. The teacher can then look inside the pots and talk with any children who may be feeling sad, angry or anxious.

We are Lark Hill

Our other main focus as a school has been belonging. We want every child to feel included, important and known. We are doing a unit of work called “We are Lark Hill” This has allowed us to discuss the new changes to school due to coronavirus and allow the children to express how they are feeling. We have played games to allow the children to tell us about themselves. We created class promises that we will follow in class and at playtimes. We discussed what we all have in common and what is unique about each of us. We have created self-portraits surrounded with words that best describe us around.


Finally we have talked about our dreams and aspirations. We will use these lovely pieces of work and create a Y2 display for everyone to see.

Covid 19

We want to take the opportunity to thank you for your support and patience as we have worked out the best way to dismiss the children at the end of the day. The children will line up as a class. Their class teacher will go to a gate each (holding a sign with the class name). The teacher will call the children forward and release them to their grown-ups one at a time. Please try to refrain from shouting you child’s name as the children have been told to stay in their line until their teacher calls them forward.


Children are being asked to wash their hands with soap regularly throughout the day. The children all have their own equipment and they are being encouraged to stay apart and not touch one another. Unfortunately, children won’t be able to bring in cake or treats from home on their birthday at the moment.


If you have any messages you need us to know please ring or email and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We will also ring you at the end of the day (once the children have all been dismissed) if there are any things we need to discuss with you about your child’s day.

Reading at home

In Year 2, it is important that you read with your child at least 3 times a week and sign their reading record. Children must have it signed to gain their sticker for the sticker chart. Children who read 5 times a week can earn 2 stickers towards a reading reward. A member of the Year 2 team will check reading records daily, so please ensure that reading records are returned to school each morning. Books will be changed once a week on an allotted day. In the front of their reading diary, you will find the day they change their book weekly.


Children will be given spellings to learn each Friday, spellings should be practised at home each night ready for a spelling test the following Friday. Children who get full marks on the test will receive a celebratory certificate to bring home.



In Year 2, children are beginning to learn their multiplication table facts for 2, 5, 10 and 3. Please support your child in regularly accessing ttrockstars to help develop their number fluency. If you need support logging in, please speak to a member of the team. 


Our P.E. day is Tuesday. 

A gentle reminder that our school P.E. kit is a plain white t-shirt, black shorts and black pumps or trainers for outdoor sports, without visible branding. Some P.E. sessions may take place outside so you are welcome to send in long black jogging bottoms and a long sleeved white top.

Water bottles and snacks

Don't forget to bring a water bottle to school each day - it is important for children to stay hydrated throughout the day. Please label bottles and refill them each day.

Children are welcome to bring a healthy snack such as fruit and vegetables to school each day for snack time, but are also offered a piece of fruit from school each day. Please don’t send in nuts due to children in school with allergies. Bread sticks and milk can be purchased at the start of each half-term (please speak to the school office about this.)
